How To 1: using a pendulum

Using a pendulum is perhaps the easiest skill to learn if you’d like to start exploring realities beyond our own. All you need to do is suspend your disbelief for twenty minutes, and find a simple chain you could use.
Any chain with a pendant or locket hanging from it will do, although if you start using it regularly you might consider making or buying a special pendulum. To start with, even a key on a simple chain can work; so experiment with something you have around the house before you decide to invest in personal crystal pendulum.

Sit quietly and take a few deep breaths to relax your mind; then try to empty it from thoughts. Sometimes it helps to just focus on your breathing – in, out, in, out.

Imagine a protective bubble of white light around you, through which only the purest energies can pass, and ask for your higher self or for a spirit guide to allow you to communicate.

Imagine you are a hollow pipe, just a body that can transfer information without interfering with it. Easier said than done, I know. But still, with practice it will become easy.

Hold the chain between your thumb and pointing finger, and ask the pendulum out loud to show you a ‘yes’ answer. Wait for a few moments – and observe the motion of the pendulum.

Sometimes it will move in a circle, at other times it will move away from you and towards you or from right to left. Each pendulum is different. Once you’ve established what is considered a ‘yes’, ask for a ‘no’ answer.

Now you are ready to start asking questions – but start with easy ones, and follow Three Basic Rules:

1 Always ask a question which can be answered by a ‘yes’ or a ‘no’

2 Don’t ask about the future – at least not until you are comfortable with using a pendulum and understand that there are many possible futures, each with its own path.

3 Don’t ask questions that you’re emotionally involved with until you learn to control your emotions – or they might influence the answer!

A few examples for questions you could start with:

1 Am I a man?
2 Am I a woman?
3 Am I wearing a green shirt?
4 Am I wearing blue trousers?
5 Did I just eat lunch?

It might seem silly to use a pendulum to answer such questions, but it isn’t. It is a way to build confidence in the answers the pendulum is giving you – and to communicate with your higher self. Do not use the pendulum – at least in the beginning – to make major decisions. Trust your inner voice before you trust the pendulum.

The next step would be to use the pendulum to answer questions for other people – questions you are not emotionally involved in.

Sit with a friend and let them ask the questions – just instruct them to follow the three basic rules above. At this stage, you can also probably try to guess the gender of an unborn baby – a favorite among novice pendulum users.
As you gain experience and confidence in using a pendulum, you can use it to make everyday decisions. Always remember: it is just a tool to help you connect to your inner voice, or higher self. As you advance on your spiritual journey, you’ll be able to trust this inner voice without needing ‘external’ or ‘visual’ aids.

Have fun, and never take it too seriously. A spiritual journey should be a positive and enjoyable experience!

Using a pendulum: quick guide

1 Find an object you can hang on a chain, or use a crystal pendulum if you have one.

2 Sit quietly and take a few deep breaths. Try to empty your mind from thoughts, and focus on your breathing to help you do so.

3 Imagine a protective bubble of white light around you, through which only the purest energies can pass.

4 Ask your higher self, or a spirit guide, to guide you and communicate with you.

5 Ask the pendulum to show you a ‘yes’ answer, and a ‘no’ answer. Accept that some questions cannot be answered at the moment, for various reasons.

6 Start by asking simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ questions in which there are no emotion involved, such as: Am I a man? Am I a woman? Am I wearing a blue shirt?

7 As you progress and practice, and learn to control your emotions and thoughts, you can ask more difficult questions.

8 Practice by asking ‘yes’ or ‘no’ questions for friends.

9 End the session by thanking your Higher Self, or you Spirit Guide, for their assistance and communication.

Daniela I. Norris, a former diplomat turned writer, lost her twenty-year-old brother in a drowning accident in May 2010. While feeling as much shock and grief as everyone else around her, she also felt something different. She felt that her brother Michael was not really gone. He was physically gone, but he was still around. That was when she embarked on a journey of learning and exploration, her very own skeptic's journey to mediumship. She lives near Geneva, Switzerland.

The movement of the pendulum is called. The ideo motor response, an unconscious movement of the hand. Some say it is guided by spirit. I use the pendulun to demonstrate how the mind affects the physical body. I have also found that a ring at the top of the chain, slipped over a finger gives a truer response.
