Why is it that so few of us bother to vote in elections? On the face of it this may seem a strange way to start a spiritual article. But is it? As spirit we have chosen a physical body to experience life this time. Part of life is being part of the society that we have chosen to live in. We are not isolated individuals but part of the community. The community that we, all of us here, have chosen spiritually to be a part of, is Britain.
As part of the British community our spiritual selves have a set of duties and responsibilities to those we come into contact with. These are to love unconditionally, to help others evolve and to be become the best that they can be. We have a responsibility to instil confidence in all those we meet and to help them understand there is more to life than the material things that surround us. We also have a spiritual responsibility to remember that we are all one. The whole world is our community and it is not just those we come into contact with on a day to day basis that we have a responsibility to.
But just how can we help those in other parts of the world with whom we have no day to day contact? This is where our physical selves play a part. One of the responsibilities of our physical selves is to elect a government to represent us in the world. It is our responsibility because, as spirits we chose to come and live in a democracy. Part of living in a democracy is that we have this incredible freedom that most of us take for granted. Other spirits have chosen to live in countries that do not have this freedom, some have even chosen to die to draw attention to their plight.
But these spirits are also part of us and we have a responsibility to help them. One of the ways we can do this is to write to our elected representatives and complain at the way the world just sits by and watches as these atrocities happen. But most of the time, however appalled we are, we do nothing. Why?
It is because we have lost faith in our politicians. Just as we have a responsibility to take the time and trouble to vote so they have a responsibility to us to be honest, truthful and trustworthy. Because they have broken their part of the deal, we have given up. But, by giving up and not voting, we are allowing them to bring in policies we may not agree with. We are allowing ourselves to be distracted by insignificant things whilst all round the world the other parts of our spiritual selves are suffering. One of the ways we evolve is by helping others to evolve. If we do nothing to help the other parts of our spiritual selves to evolve, we will not evolve either.
So what can we do? We can begin by voting when there are elections. If we do not agree with anything that the politicians are saying then we should write that down on our ballot papers. We should show them that we are prepared to vote but it is they who are not offering us that choice. If there are more spoilt ballot papers than ones that can be counted they will have to listen. However, even this freedom may soon be denied to us as they are now intending to bring in electronic voting. Unless we ensure they is a facility for a Do Not Agree With Any of the Above we will soon have no options but the ones they allow us. Is this really what we want?
The world is our responsibility and we will only evolve spiritually when we take our spiritual responsibilities to the other parts of our spiritual selves seriously
